Weighted pull-up
Weighted pull-up is a strength discipline in BYOH, trained with weights and building arms and back. Its ladder runs from 5 reps at 0.10 × BW at Level 1 to 5 reps at 0.75 × BW at Level 9, and Level 10 is the world record.
The ten levels
BYOH measures a discipline in ten cleared levels. Level 9 is a genuine feat; Level 10 is the standing world record, which is there to be looked at rather than reached.
Weighted pull-up starts at Level 1 with 5 reps at 0.10 × BW. Level 5 asks for 5 reps at 0.30 × BW, and Level 9 - the last level a person can train towards - 5 reps at 0.75 × BW. The largest single jump is from Level 8 to Level 9, 5 reps at 0.60 × BW to 5 reps at 0.75 × BW.
| Level | Target |
|---|---|
| 1 | 5 reps at 0.10 × BW |
| 2 | 5 reps at 0.15 × BW |
| 3 | 5 reps at 0.20 × BW |
| 4 | 5 reps at 0.25 × BW |
| 5 | 5 reps at 0.30 × BW |
| 6 | 5 reps at 0.40 × BW |
| 7 | 5 reps at 0.50 × BW |
| 8 | 5 reps at 0.60 × BW |
| 9 | 5 reps at 0.75 × BW |

The load you add, on top of your own weight, is a multiple of your own bodyweight — 0.1×BW, 0.15×BW, 0.2×BW, 0.25×BW, 0.3×BW, 0.4×BW, 0.5×BW, 0.6×BW, 0.75×BW across the ten levels — so the kilograms follow the hero rather than the table. For a female hero the upper body reference is 0.60 of that.
The record past Level 9
Weighted pull-up — Provisional legend benchmark.
Governed weighted pull-up records are single repetitions with the heaviest load, or a count in a minute, and neither is a set of five at a share of bodyweight. This is a provisional benchmark rather than a governed record.
How it is done
- Hang a load from a dipping belt, or wear a snug weighted vest or backpack.
- Take an overhand grip a little wider than the shoulders and start from a dead hang.
- Pull until the chin clears the bar, and lower to straight arms each time.
How the attempt is judged
A level only means something if two heroes clearing it have done the same thing. These are the rules BYOH counts an attempt by — they are the rules of a game, not coaching.
- What counts as one
- One repetition is from a full dead hang to the chin clearly above the bar, carrying the load.
- The set
- One unbroken set with the load on. You may pause in the dead hang; letting go of the bar or taking the load off ends the set.
- What you need
- An overhand grip a little wider than the shoulders, and a dipping belt, weighted vest or snug backpack. The load is only what is added - belt, vest or backpack and everything in it: your bodyweight times the level's figure, and BYOH scales that for a female hero's reference.
- What ends it
- Kipping, kicking, a load swinging into momentum, or a chin level with the bar, does not count.
What it builds
Weighted pull-up feeds Arms and Back in a hero’s record, working lats, biceps, forearms.
- Vertical pull
- Biceps
- Grip & forearms
Weighted pull-up is one of 41 strength disciplines. It shares its weights requirement with 12 other strength disciplines. Arms is also built by pull-ups, cross-body hammer curl, chin-ups and 3 more, and a broad attribute needs several of them rather than one taken far.
